No surprise, actually.
It’s sad, though, that Cali folks seem to think they’re the first ones to think this up.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I’m pretty sure Texas thought this up first. And talking post-civil war here, but legally trying to secede. Texas has been working on this for years.
This article details the problem with the sentiment, and why it’s not going to happen.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
More importantly, I think the motivation behind it is insightful, too.
Texans have been trying to secede for decades, with the latest referendum on the subject in March of this year. And it was mostly the result of a natural sense of independence rather than as a response to the political climate (not that the effort loses steam when “political” stimuli are contrary to the state’s views).
Californians have recently started talking about trying to secede in response to something that happened recently. (yes, I used recently twice on purpose. This just cropped up).
I’ve said it already and I’ve said it again - let’s get over it people.
The last eight years sucked for conservatives. Now it’s your turn. I’ve been surprised to see that much has been written and said about the Left’s inability to see - let alone understand or sympathize - the opinions of the Right.
But this desire to rage-quit the country is just another manifestation of the principle. They can’t understand that the other team had to take their lumps when they won, and are unwilling to take those same lumps when they lose.
THAT’S HOW THIS WORKS!
There are winners and losers.
No, everyone does NOT get a participation trophy.
Grow up. Stop being such crybabies.
Don’t want to hear it from me?
Jonathon Pie nails it, too.

Realistically 10,000 people want to secede, while 10,000,000 just want their coffee in the morning. When you have 39M people in one area, you’re gonna get a shit load of noisy loons.

While yes, you do have a point about having to alternate between differing political perspectives, I wouldn’t really equivocate the effects of the Obama presidency as the possibilities of the effects of the Trump presidency. The right had to worry about paying for healthcare, taxes, and possibly the loss of the right to bear arms under Obama. Under Trump, people are worried about the loss of civil rights for certain groups, and I want to say that’s a much more serious concern.

I live and California and will say that this is not a thing. I’m sure every state has a few loons that want to secede. Vermont has also been talking about it for years. Conservatives have been on a vicious 8 year long angry temper tantrum over Obama, so now telling liberals to “grow up” is pretty rich.

I’d say losing civil rights and repealing part of the Bill of Rights are equally serious concerns.
Not that I thought that would ever happen under Obama, nor do I think the Civil Rights Act is in danger from the Trump Administration.

Well given that california has a large number of hispanics as well as immigrants and scientists as well as an envornment that is still suffering from the damage caused decades ago, it’s not hard to see why the state wants to disrespect a candidate who pretty much took a massive dump on the state and all who live in it during his campaign.
Let me be clear - Everything else about his economic policies and whatnot are semantics and will be solved by people more intelligent than him. But the very fact that his campaign revolved around outright sexism and racism means it isn’t right to just sit back and go “Oh, okay, I guess this works”. Cause it doesn’t.

As a Californian, the ridiculousness of this is astounding.
How can you have a super-wealthy enclave without the industrial might of a large nation to stand behind it?
What is California without the US? Where does its defence come from? Most of its infrastructure funding? Its workforce?

The thing is, though, it’s not just Trump as a person, it’s who he brings in and the ideas he promotes. Hell, we’ve seen posters advocating for whites and Europeans to band together in an alt-right movement posted in the east end of Toronto, and that’s a bit worrying. While Trump himself may be contained, it’s the fallout that worries me.

Trump has said a lot of shit to get elected, but he’s hardly the first person to do that, now is he?
But what has Trump actually done that’s so bad a whole state should want to secede because of it?
Nothing. He has done nothing. He doesn’t even take office for two months.

I in no way support the man that was elected.
That being said. You do not secede.
That is not how this WORKS and it’s one of my main complaints about the Confederate States of America (you, know obviously behind the support of slavery)
You lost. That sucks. But it only means that you need to try hard in 4 years to make sure this jackass doesn’t get a 2nd term. It doesn’t mean you take your ball and go home from the playground. You work harder. You get more followers. You present a less polarizing candidate.
The CSA should have done the same thing. Worked harder to sway the vote to their opinions inside the system during the next vote- not outside of it. (again, not that I would support them and I would hope they would have lost if they came at it again, but that’s how our system WORKS).
I’m not going to tell anyone to “grow up” or marginalize the issues. They are REALLY IMPORTANT ISSUES! Peaceful marches and demonstrations are ALWAYS welcome in this country and the right to form should NOT be infringed upon.

Totally true - but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t taught those kids that lesson, either, or mean that this tantrum they’re throwing about the election isn’t the result of that lesson.
I’m 10-15 years older than most of the people in my office, who are recent “arts” grads.
I’ve never seen such a group of self-centered, entitled people in my life.
Even the way they volunteer is geared around how they can post it on Facebook to make themselves look better.
They take a sick day anytime something doesn’t go their way.
My wife and I make sure we don’t coddle our kids when they fail. Sometimes we comfort them, but sometimes we just tell them to be brave and push them right back out there.
It’s of great importance in life to know what to do when you fail.
Crying about it is never the answer.

The thing is, those aren’t even losses for conservatives. Don’t want gays to get married? Then don’t marry someone the same gender as you. Don’t want an abortion? Then don’t have one.
Other than that? We’ve all retained our rights to worship where we wanted to and collect as many firearms as we wanted to (as every mass shooting during Obama’s tenure proved with spikes in gun and ammo sales).
But what OP doesn’t realize is that the threat people are fearing is one where hate is normalized. And, so far, that fear has already borne very, very real fruit (see: all the hate crimes that have been committed since last Tuesday).

Why?
Of any of the states that share the cockamamie idea to secede, Texas is probably the only one with a real shot of succeeding at it since we have our own power grid, our own military, we’re not landlocked, we have a healthy agricultural economy, we have two major international shipping ports, we have an abundance of land, we have next gen tech here, and more. But why? It would be an incredibly messy struggle to be successful at all. We have all the resources necessary to stand alone, but even that would give us the slimmest of chances towards being able to do so. And both the newly (re)minted Republic of Texas and the US would suffer immensely for it.
Secessionists are narrow minded, myopic idiots. Both in Texas and California.

Politically, you are correct, he has done nothing to offend anyone. (Granted, he hasn’t held political office before.)
And yes, just like every other politician, he has said things on the campaign trail that likely will never come to pass.
However, several of the things he said weren’t just about policy or campaign promises, and no matter how he tries to backpedal and spin some of his comments, they did stir up and embolden the people who want an excuse to be violent towards Muslims, Latinos, women, and other people who should have every right and protection that every American is entitled to. There are large groups of people who are genuinely worried about the safety of themselves and their families.
Personally, even though I didn’t vote for him, I’m willing to give him his duly elected chance to be a good leader, and I’m trying my best to give his supporters honest consideration and discussion into the matters that they care about. But please, let people cry and worry and protest, freedom of speech is one of the things that has made this country great.

Also, about those tantrums and participation trophies and not accepting results? Hardly exclusive to any one group.

But what has Trump actually done that’s so bad a whole state should want to secede because of it?
Nothing. He has done nothing. He doesn’t even take office for two months.
That’s part of the problem ... Trump has done NOTHING .
He’s inherently a nobody ... just another 1-percenter, a rich boy born with silver spoon in his mouth, everything has been handed to him on a silver plate for his entire life. Made millions? He was GIVEN millions by rich daddy to start off his ‘career’. All he has done in the business world is buy and sell real estate. He’s created no jobs or companies that aren’t entirely centered around selling his brand (an ephemeral and absolutely useless product).
He’s done NOTHING to be worthy of consideration for the most important and powerful job in the entire fucking world.
So we are left with nothing active or concrete in his resume to show what he can do, or how he could accomplish anything positive for the nation, hence we can only rely upon his actual words rather than actions. And his words are unfuckingbelievably frightening. Then man’s ideology is inherently fascist. He clearly thinks the entire fucking US government should exist solely to enrich him monetarily, and fuck everybody else.
I’ve been a proponent of Texas seceding for years simply because as a Californian, I despise bible-thumping idiots and want them out of my country as soon as humanly possible. Just an fyi, I’m a West Coast Conservative (which is equivalent to a bleeding-heart liberal according to most Republicans), and I despise East Coast Liberals almost as much as Texans.

The ACA is a republican born and bred project. It was the only thing the “tyrant” could pass. The offensive part was the mandate, buy insurance or be fined, but that was upheld by the SC, so nothing now.
There were half hearted attempts at gun legislation, but only the least pragmatic liberal can see that tree is not worth barking up.
